Fifth Myths That Turn Americans Against Ukraine

BY JP LINDSLEY
🎯 I’m an American reporting daily from Ukraine on Chicago’s WGN Radio.
I’ve lived—and escaped—the heart of the Neocon, Paleocon, and Fox News worlds in DC and Austin. I learned the art of communication from the man who helped elect Nixon, Reagan, and H.W. Bush.
But after fleeing Fox News—literally, in a car chase—I rejected the deep state’s manipulation of our politics.
That’s why I understand exactly why many Americans—especially those close to Trump—hesitate to support Ukraine.
What I’m about to share is the Kremlin’s worst nightmare. Save this thread to understand.
💡 FIRST: Rule #1 of informational war club: Don’t whine about propaganda. Dig into its roots—because the best propaganda always exploits real, justified emotions.
There are five myths that turn Americans against Ukraine. These myths persist because the Kremlin is smart. Moscow anchors its arguments in issues Americans genuinely and rightly care about. But here’s the twist: Ukraine is actually the key to solving many of the problems these myths exploit. Let’s break it down:
1️⃣ Claim: "Victoria Nuland created the Maidan Revolution."
🇷🇺 What Russia realizes:
Americans are disgusted with the "deep state," so Moscow circulates images of a single state department official Nuland handing out cookies to Ukrainian protestors in 2014. Moscow claims her leaked phone call with the U.S. ambassador proves she orchestrated Ukraine’s revolution.
✅ Reality:
Victoria Nuland was feverishly working to stop regime change in Ukraine. On that leaked 2014 call, Nuland smugly discussed cooperating with Yanukovych—not regime change!
Millions of Ukrainians rejected the deals brokered by Victoria Nuland and the West with Yanukovych. Ukrainians told Nuland and all deep staters to f*** off. This was their revolution. Nuland didn't create but she did try to curtail it.
2️⃣ Claim: "Biden supports Ukraine because of Burisma."
🇷🇺 What Russia pushes:
From Joe Rogan to Elon Musk to members of Congress, one solitary word is argument enough against Ukraine: Burisma. Why? Because they believe that Joe Biden only supports Ukraine because his son made money from this energy company. But ...
✅ Reality:
Burisma isn’t Ukrainian. It’s a pro-Kremlin firm that opposes Ukraine's Maidan Revolution. The CEO who hired Hunter Biden was part of Yanukovych’s pro-Russia regime, which fled to Moscow from Ukraine in 2014. Only after Burisma's CEO fled Ukraine did he hire Hunter Biden. By the way, Burisma has gas fields in Crimea and so stood to gain by Putin's taking of the peninsula.
Burisma is Russian, not Ukrainian. That fact alone will change a lot of minds.
3️⃣ Myth: "The military-industrial complex is driving this war."
🇷🇺 What Russia understands:
Americans are skeptical of terrible forever wars after the disasters in Iraq and Afghanistan. Russia uses this mistrust to frame support for Ukraine as more of the same.
✅ Reality:
The U.S. defense industry profits from dragging out the war—not speeding up Ukraine’s victory. Last year, 2023, was a record year for sales of US weapons to other nations.
Ukrainians don’t want a long war; they’re fighting for freedom. Giving Ukraine what it needs to win quickly disrupts the corrupt status quo upon which the defense industry thrives.
4️⃣ Claim: "Helping Ukraine makes World War III more likely."
🇷🇺 What Russia attempts:
Scare Americans into submission: "Let Russia have its way, or violence will escalate globally."
✅ Reality:
Every time Ukraine crosses Putin’s "red lines"—like HIMARS strikes in 2024 to save Kharkiv city, or the incursion into Kursk, or the destruction of Russia's Black Sea fleet—Russia gets weaker, with no actual major response.
Delaying Ukraine’s victory, as Biden's team has done, only buys Russia time to create stronger alliances with North Korea, China, and Iran, who all smell growing American weakness. Giving Ukrainians the right tools to fight is the best way to deter WWIII. Good thing is, Ukrainians are willing to do the hard work.
... which brings us to the last big claim:
5️⃣ Claim: "The Ukrainian people want no part of this."
🇷🇺 What Russia claims:
The Kremlin, and often the unwitting leftwing and rightwing media, from the BBC to Tucker Carlson, frame the war as a battle between elites—Zelensky vs. the Kremlin—while portraying Ukrainians has hapless folks in the middle.
✅ Reality:
Fact is, the Ukraine-Russia war is a struggle of free people versus the ultimate deep state, the Kremlin.
In just a couple days, the rich, powerful Russian-backed regime of Syria fell to rag-tag militias. On the other hand, Ukrainians have for nearly three years resisted the full might of the Russian army, which is supplied and supported by North Korea, Iran, Beijing, and others.
If the Ukrainian people didn't want to resist, do you really think Ukraine would still be holding on?
