Are Western Leaders Afraid of Victory?
“You will not fear the terror of the night nor the arrow that flies by day….”:
Ten months in wartime Ukraine.
“You will not fear the terror of the night nor the arrow that flies by day….”
These are the words sent to me by a friend who had worked at the Pentagon, moments before Russia began to invade in the early hours of February 24. With these words, I knew the war had begun
Happy New Year’s Eve, a day on which Russia launched missiles on many Ukrainian cities. In Kyiv, Russian missiles hit a hotel and residences and injured a Japanese journalist. I was so damn tired, though, from the week, and maybe the year, that I slept until the all-clear sounded, my mind protected by sleep from apprehension.
Here's my 30 December report from Ukraine on Chicago's WGN Radio, with guest host Wendy Snyder. With WGN, I've shared these reports each weekday since February. We talked about the early moments of the war, how things have changed, and the key but uncomfortable question we must ask: Does Washington really want a quick Ukrainian victory?
Notably, both times I have tried to mention this question on air, I lose internet connection briefly.
Plus:
—Listening to the Ukrainian version of the "Bella Ciao" song, I recall racing through Zaporizhzhia fields as Russian artillery fired.
—The question we must ask politicians in Washington about Ukraine? The regular people support swift Ukrainian victory. Does Washington?
—A champagne story for New Years. Why anyone who has displayed a Ukrainian flag, sent money, sent good words or love, is part of the victory effort.
—Joe Lindsley, American in Ukraine since getting happily stuck here in this freedom-loving country during the pandemic
“Joseph Lindsley’s reports are enlightening, frightening, heart-wrenchingly and
poetically descriptive.” —a listener to the daily Ukraine report on Chicago’s WGN Radio
