LVIV—On Christmas, live from snowy Lviv, we dive into how Ukrainians celebrate the holiday season, even during war. From fasting suppers and 12 traditional dishes to the powerful ritual of strangers shouting, “Christ is born!” in cafés and shops, we explore the national glue of traditions that bind Ukrainians together.
Joe Lindsley, rather exhausted after a long train journey, is joined by "Blacksmith," Ukrainian Freedom News's video editor from Lviv. We also report briefly on the horrible Russian Christmas morning attacks—more details in the next day's report.
The Christmas greeting in Ukraine is Христос рождається! / Christ is born and the reply is Славімо його! / Glory to him!

Christmas Carolling in Lviv
To those in the West who value tradition: Look at this video and see what Russia is destroying.
In Ukraine, Christmas begins on December 25th and lasts for weeks. Carollers walk into homes uninvited, tables overflow, and after dinner, everyone sings together. No TV!
But tonight in Lviv, amidst this vibrant celebration, a deep sadness lingered. Moscow’s war on faith and tradition didn’t end with the Christmas Day collapse of the Soviet Union—it rages on, even this morning, with missile attacks.
Can this way of life survive? Can free people hold on until the West wakes up?
Russia’s War on Christmas
“I saw three missiles come crashing in
on Christmas Day, on Christmas Day
on Christmas Day in the morning
“And what was in those missiles all three
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day?
And what was in those missiles all three
On Christmas Day in the morning?
“Pure evil from Russia and their allies
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day
Pure evil from Russia and their allies
On Christmas Day in the morning
“But, Ukraine today still wills to be free
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day
Stay true, hold on, and we will win, damnit
On Christmas Day in the morning
and all the bells on earth shall ring on
