Putin claims he is fighting the decadent, over-commercialized wasteland of the West. But Ukraine, which Putin seeks to destroy, is one of the few Western countries where tradition thrives. This is most clearly felt during Ukraine’s January Christmas.
It’s as though Putin is consumed by a mad jealousy. During the Soviet times, Moscow sought to destroy religion and traditions. The communists forced people to celebrate New Years instead of Christmas. To this day, “New Years” is more popular in Russia than Christmas day. But in western Ukraine, they held fast to their traditions. And now, turning toward their ancient roots, Russian-speaking Ukrainians from the east, where tradition was devastated, are recovering their roots.
In Ukraine, starting on January 7, far away from the commercialized Western holiday, Ukrainians are in the Christmas season. Here are stories and songs from these days, light versus darkness …
