“... in the park, I think it was the Fourth of July,” sings the band Chicago.
Two years ago from today, I think it was the Fourth of July, Ukrainians achieved the liberation of Snake Island, a storied place also known in antiquity as the Island of Heroes.
In legend, Greek hero Achilles was buried there after he was killed across the Black Sea at the Battle of Troy.
In reality, later Greeks built on Snake Island a temple to Achilles, later of course destroyed by Russia in the 19th century.
Today in our new age of heroes, there’s an elite drone unit in Ukraine called Achilles ...
An American friend who is also in Ukraine in this time of war for freedom texted me these words:
“HAPPY FORTH OF JULY to you too. How wild that we are in a country on the opposite side of the world from whence we came, fighting for the ideals that are supposed to define the country we left”
