DAILY UKRAINE REPORT ON CHICAGO’S WGN:
War Day 618: Russia, Iran, and Hamas Have a Shared Goal: Destruction of Ukraine and Israel
🇺🇦 600+ DAYS OF WAR REPORTING on Chicago's WGN Radio with host Bob Sirott and Joe Lindsley, the only American reporting in Ukraine every single day until victory 🎙️ from Friday 3 November 2023
KHARKIV—After a night of drone strikes, I report from Kharkiv on Russia, Iran, and Hamas, and their shared goal of destroying not only Israel but also Ukraine. Still, there seems to be a window for the West to help Ukraine defeat Russia quickly: Despite the recent drone attacks and front-line shellings, Russia has still not mounted a major reply to Ukraine's massive September 22 blow upon Moscow's Black Sea Fleet.
And I share a clip from our latest Land of the Free podcast: Alina Poliakova, managing editor of Ukrainska Pravda, tells stories of how a free press fights corruption in wartime, undeterred by martial law or Russian rockets.
War Day 617: On the Feast of All Souls, Zaluzhnyi’s Warning
🇺🇦 600+ DAYS OF WAR REPORTING on Chicago's WGN Radio with host Bob Sirott and Joe Lindsley, the only American reporting in Ukraine every single day until victory 🎙️ from Thursday 2 November 2023
KHARKIV—On the Feast of All Souls, I stopped at a cafe in the park as the air-raid alarms wailed. Over a steadying beer, I thought of the those who’ve lost life and limb and felt the heaviness of the fight. Still the park even in the rain was full: endurance. In The Economist, Ukraine’s commander-in-chief General Zaluzhnyi says there will be no “deep and beautiful breakthrough” with a massive change in the military technology delivered to Ukraine.
At the same time, Russia has been sending fewer missiles to Ukraine: Will Western leaders keep hovering in the grey in-between, or fuel up Ukraine to strike for victory? And we discuss the affinity Ukrainians feel for Israelis, who face an enemy that like likewise wants them erased from the map.
Cloaking themselves in the mantle of the oppressed, anti-Jewish Arabs have been occupying and trying to destroy Israel, just as Moscow was sending Russians to occupy places in Ukraine.
Taras Byk: What Ukraine Can Teach Us About Democracy
Taras Byk's special mission is the breakup of the Russian Federation, a project that doesn't seem so far-fetched after the Prigozhin mutiny. A civil society activist and political strategist, he says that Ukraine's Maidan Revolution, in which he participated, saved not only Ukraine but also Europe. With American journalist Joe Lindsley, he discusses the importance of self-organization in Ukraine's stand for freedom and battles against corruption. Can Ukraine's example help revitalise the idea of democracy?
Bartender Turned Medic: Ashot Galstian’s War Zone Story
In the face of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ashot Galstian traded his Kyiv bartending career for life in the Donbas war zone. Amid shelling, he rushes wounded warriors away from the front, while his friend Nastia, a popular singer-turned-medic tends to the injuries. From a family of Armenian restaurateurs, Ashot says the hospitality business prepared him for the most important guests: soldiers on the brink of death. With American journalist Joe Lindsley, Galstian discuss the importance of practices like meditation and a healthy diet especially a war zone.
