It was another hellish night in Kharkiv. Stay tuned for my report later today what happened through the night. Meanwhile, here is a breakdown of extremely eventful hours yesterday:
WGN RADIO DAILY UKRAINE REPORT
FROM KHARKIV, War Day 699: “Maybe I’m naive but I don’t think evil should win."
🇺🇦 600+ DAYS OF WAR REPORTING on Chicago's WGN Radio with host Bob Sirott and reporter Joe Lindsley, the only American reporting in Ukraine every single day until victory 🎙️ from Tuesday 23 January 2024
KHARKIV—I was sleeping on the floor of a bathroom last night, as has become normal, when Russia's first wave of attacks began around 4am. By 8am, Moscow had pounded both Kyiv and Kharkiv with missiles. You can see here a glimpse of the carnage at an animal shelter.
While this hell continues, Elon Musk and Ben Shapiro, two Americans with influential audiences, were visiting Auschwitz in neighbouring Poland. Did that place teach them to help stop contemporary genocides or was it a photo-op? Russia's war on Ukraine would not be happening today if 10 years ago Ukrainians hadn't made a stand against tyranny in their Maidan, or "public square," Revolution.
We recall the haunting legacy Serhiy Nihoyan, an Armenian-Ukrainian protestor killed by the Moscow-backed secret police January 22, 2014. “Maybe I’m naive but I don’t think evil should win," Serhiy said. "Sooner or later, the good will prevail.”
War Day 698: In a City Just 30 Miles from Russia, How Do Ukrainians Live?
🇺🇦 600+ DAYS OF WAR REPORTING on Chicago's WGN Radio with host Bob Sirott and reporter Joe Lindsley, the only American reporting in Ukraine every single day until victory 🎙️ from Monday 22 January 2024
I report from Kharkiv to show how even in a place where Russian missiles hit without warning Ukrainians show the world what it means to live freely. Listen to people underground, in January, sing the songs of Christmas, which Ukrainians in defiance of the world celebrate until February.
But time is running out: "Nobody knows the exact timeline of Russia's madness, but we know Ukraine is buying us time and paying for it with blood," says Lithuania's foreign minister.
And here’s the band featured in the episode:
