It was tough for me to make this report today, as we receive awful news both of heroic deaths and of elite hypocrisy. I was nearly shaking with anger. —JP Lindsley

War Day 566: DARK HOUR, BRIGHT GOAL
LVIV— Not Sure About Ukraine? Here Are Two Things to Consider
First—Watch the film The Darkest Hour in which Gary Oldman plays Winston Churchill. Does this resonate today?
I know it’s Hollywood, but from my knowledge of Churchill, the film is accurate in spirit. While working for the UK’s Lord Williams, I heard personal stories about Churchill from Lady Jane Williams, mother of the Archbishop of Canterbury, who had been Sir Winston’s last private secretary. And I was one of the first people to listen at Cambridge University to previously secret recordings of those who knew Churchill personally.
Those experiences inform my thinking here in Ukraine, in this dire and consequential time.
Second—Look at a map of Ukraine within Europe--and realize how much of Europe is under threat.
This shows us two things, something scary and something encouraging:
Scary: The Russian threat is extremely serious …
Encouraging: But thanks to the Ukrainians and those who’ve helped, Europe is not falling into a tyrant's hands as it did so quickly in 1939.
So: Study what happened in the 1930s. Do you see parallels today? And do you see the major difference—that because of Ukraine’s stand, war in Europe and beyond can indeed be avoided?
Churchill was a voice in the wilderness against appeasement of Hitler, until it was almost too late, when the Nazis had already overtaken much of Europe.
We can stop the tiger-tyrant before it’s really too late.

"We Are Waiting For You" Means Something Different in Ukrainian
Notes from a Ukrainian Train
SOMEWHERE IN UKRAINE—In English, when we say, "we are waiting for you," we tend to mean it impatiently, as in "where the hell are you?"
In Ukrainian, when they say "ми чекаємо" in Ukrainian or even when they say "we are waiting for you" in English it means something totally different: It's the epitome of hospitality: whenever you arrive, you will be welcome.
Having lived in NYC, it took me a while to get used to this part of Ukrainian culture. But I much appreciate it and I no longer feel stressed when a Ukrainian sends me a text saying, "we are waiting for you."
