Police-State Raids in Ukraine Reveal How Russia Seeks to Kill Democracy
LVIV—Moscow’s goal is to break democracy in Ukraine. And after 2.5 years of war, we see that this is indeed a test of whether free people can withstand not just run-of-the-mill tear gas but rather daily missile and drone attacks and the hell of the front.
Unprecedented Recruitment Raids Agitate Ukrainian Society: Over the weekend, Ukraine’s Territorial Recruitment Agency conducted sweeping centre-city raids—from rock concerts to hotels, from Kyiv to Lviv. For the first time in 2.5 years of full-scale resistance to Russia's war, Ukraine felt like a police state, raising tough questions about how to maintain democracy while fighting for survival. Some defend these actions as necessary for wartime—a wake-up call to the complacent—but others see them as unsustainable and anti-democratic. Either way, it was sad to behold these echoes of the police-state Ukraine overthrew in 2014. And Moscow propaganda was only too happy gleefully to push videos of these raids to gullible Americans.

Russia Flaunts Iranian and North Korean Alliances as Ukraine Faces Winter Woes: Putin openly meets with Iranian leaders while Iranian-made Shahed drones, which have grown faster and quieter, hit Ukraine almost nightly, while North Korean soldiers operate for Russia on Ukrainian soil. As Ukrainians brace for winter, their pleas for more air defense grow louder, but with Washington still withholding permission or Ukraine to strike back, the outlook feels grim. The Iran-Russia connection isn't just diplomatic—it's a very real threat Ukrainians face every night.
Russian FPV Drones Kill Another American Volunteer in Ukraine: Nick Duckworth, a volunteer medic from Sonoma, California, was tragically killed by a Russian FPV drone while protecting a friend. These drones are terrifyingly efficient, and Russians often target Americans fighting for Ukraine, even putting bounties on their heads. Muscovites had been going after Duckworth on X for more than a year.
In Florida, American Father Joins Ukraine Soldier-Musicians in Mourning Son Who Died for Ukraine: In a powerful and emotional moment, the father of American soldier Edward Wilton, killed fighting for Ukraine, shared his son's final moments with an audience in Orlando during the tour of Ukraine's Cultural Forces military musicians. Wounded Ukrainian soldiers, still in active service, invited him to speak, creating a deep bond between Ukrainians and Americans united by the struggle for freedom.
Ukrainian Soldier's Marathon Triumph in Chicago: Roman Kashpur, a Ukrainian soldier who lost his leg to a landmine, completed his fifth marathon in Chicago, cheered on by Ukrainian-Americans. With a giant banner of St. Michael, the Archangel, Ukraine’s symbol of protection, they honored Roman’s indomitable spirit, reminding the world that Ukraine’s fight for survival spans continents.

We are naturally focused on the war in Ukraine, as the largest such conflict since WWII on the territory of Europe. But this is just the latest manifestation of extreme aggression from Russia, in a pattern of expansion and coercion of its neighbours that goes back centuries. In this interview, Keir Giles explains the outline of future threats / future wars, and whether its possible to deter the Kremlin from returning Europe to a state of perpetual warfare. Is containing a revanchist Russia the best we can hope for, or are there political, social and structural problems that prevent Europe from mounting an adequate defence. Are we in a race against time, where direct conflict with Russia is practically unavoidable, and the stakes higher than we can possibly imagine?
Keir Giles has spent his career watching, studying, and explaining Russia. Keir’s work has appeared in a wide range of academic and military publications across Europe and in North America, and he is a regular contributor and commentator on Russian affairs for international print and broadcast media. He is a Senior Consulting Fellow at the UK's Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), and also works with the Conflict Studies Research Centre (CSRC), a group of deep subject matter experts on Eurasian security formerly attached to the British Ministry of Defence. He is a regular contributor to research projects on Russian security issues in the U.S., UK, and Europe.
Stas Olenchenko, Ukrainian:
Ukraine now has to single-handedly beat all the dipshit dictatorships of the world while the largest democratic military alliance in the history of humanity is making sure Ukraine isn’t too well-equipped for actually winning the war. Make it make sense, please.

Is the White House Helping Russia?
Washington has made a great show of supporting Ukraine “as long as it takes.” But when we look closely we see that America’s sanctions on Russia are flimsy. A Russian firm is gleefully obtaining American tech to bomb Ukrainian cities. Based on reporting from @InformNapalm
