War Day 609: Resilience in the Ruins: Kharkiv Rebuilds Even As Russia Continues Assault
DAILY WAR JOURNAL, from Wednesday 25 October 2023:
KHARKIV, UKRAINE—Almost every night, Iranian-made Shahed suicide drones fly low over Ukrainian rivers and fields on their way to cause the destruction Russia seeks. Ukrainians call these drones “mopeds,” because of their sound as they, unlike missiles, slowly approach. Yesterday, reckless Russia sent these drones near a nuclear power plant in Khmelnytskyi, western Ukraine. Air defense worked but as a result of falling debris 16 people were injured and apartments lay in ruins.
But although Russia continues to send Iranian drones throughout Ukraine, there’s been an absence of major Russian missile strikes on Ukrainian soil for over a month, coincident with Ukraine’s major blow upon Russia’s Black Sea Fleet headquarters and port in Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula, occupied by Moscow since 2014.
Why the pause? Is Russia preparing for a larger, more devastating offensive, or has Ukraine's tenacity disrupted Russia's strategies? With the approach of winter, a chilling reminder of past attempts to cripple Ukraine's infrastructure looms. Last winter, Russian forces targeted essential utilities, seeking to weaken Ukraine's resolve through deprivation.
In fact, yesterday the Illinois Broadcasting Association awarded its Silver Dome Award to our daily Ukraine report on Chicago’s WGN Radio because of my report during one of the 2022 infrastructure attacks upon Lviv, a series of attacks that began in October.
But as winter draws near once again, the Russians have engaged in terroristic missile attacks on cities near the front but when it comes to massive nationwide strikes, they’ve been quiet.
The Ukrainians have not been so quiet.
In the past days, Russians have reported multiple explosions in Sevastopol, Crimea, where Moscow has a long-standing Russian naval base. Ukraine is showing that with ingenuity and long-range weapons from the West, it can indeed hit Russian military assets in Crimea, and Russia can barely respond.
Here in Kharkiv I see resilience coexisting with sorrow and rage. I took a walk today to the part of the city center that the Russians bombed the day before Hamas invaded Israel. It was haunting: Apartment buildings with walls ripped off resembled doll’s houses or dioramas.
And that October 6 attack on Kharkiv, and the preceding October 5 Russian attack, with two precision missiles on a funeral party just outside of the city: these events shook the people of Kharkiv, even though they have already endured so much hell. For the first time, as I speak with people in Kharkiv, I see tears in their eyes, but when they speak about the recent Russian atrocities, the teary eyes are unblinking: suggesting a new level of fierceness.
But more and more businesses, cafes, and shops are removing the boards from their windows and re-opening for the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion. I’ve never seen more traffic or life in this city in the big war. So Kharkiv continues to receive blows, but it’s coming back. And yet it is always extremely vulnerable: only 30 miles from Russia, we can be the target of Russian missiles before the air raid alarms have a chance to cry out.
