War Day 607: Yes, a Dark Winter is Coming, But Look Closely—Ukraine is Strengthening
🇺🇦 600+ DAYS OF WAR REPORTING on Chicago's @wgnradiovideo with host Bob Sirott and Joe Lindsley, the only American reporting in Ukraine every single day until victory 🎙️ from Monday 23 October 2023
WHAT'S COMING: WINTER OR VICTORY?
For more than a month Russia has not launched a major nationwide strike on Ukrainian cities. Instead, Moscow sends shorter-range missiles and drones to Ukrainian places near the front, including a Kharkiv suburban postal processing center over the weekend. Is Ukraine ready for Russian wintertime infrastructure attacks?
After Ukraine's successful hits upon the Russian Black Sea Fleet, is Russia capable of the sort of attacks it launched on Ukraine last winter?
And we share a clip from my Land of the Free podcast with Ukrainska Pravda: Ashot Galstian, a former bartender turned combat medic, describes how eagerly wounded Ukrainian soldiers wish to return to the fight.
You can can find a written version of this report here.
KYIV—My friend Ashot Galstian, Ukrainian bartender turned civilian combat medic, told me during a recording of the new Land of the Free podcast , that about 50 percent of wounded soldiers he is treating in medical eval missions beg for some special pill so they can run back to the fight.
This, after 20 months of Russia’s full-scale war and a dark winter looming shows the ongoing resolve of the Ukrainians, soldiers and civilian alike. And if we look closely, beyond the important Israel-Hamas headlines, we just might see that Russia is at a weak point, which might explain why Moscow's ally Iran and Hamas are distracting the world in this moment.
Yes, Russia continues to send missiles and drones to Ukraine but in the past month such attacks have mainly been to cities and places near the front lines—including a heinous Sunday hit upon a Kharkiv region postal processing facility that killed young workers.
But since Ukraine’s strike on the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet headquarters on September 22nd, and subsequent smaller strikes on Russian ships, Russia has refrained from launching major nationwide assaults. This period of reduced hostilities contrasts with the weekly Russian assaults on Ukrainian infrastructure that began on October 10th of the previous year.
Is Russia weakened? Certainly Moscow has taken some blows, and it would seem that now is the time, if the West sends the right weapons, for Ukraine to make more decisive blows. Meanwhile, not being complacent, Ukrainians are preparing for Russian infrastructure attacks. From Odesa to Kyiv, the generators are at the ready outside of shops and restaurants and people and charities are stockpiling water, candles, charged powerbanks, and firewood. For Ukrainians who lived through one dark, cold winter already this is not such a big deal.
