The only American show live from Ukraine every weekday of the war, daily on Chicago’s WGN Radio and across social media …
Since I last hit send on a Substack newsletter, I’ve been through maybe a half dozen nights of intense drone attacks; I traveled to Odesa with the Ukrainian boxing federation, which hosted a tournament overlooking the Black Sea along with Olympic gold medalists; I came under an intense and terrifying Russian ballistic missile attack while jogging in a seaside park; and I met great innovators at Lviv’s annual IT Arena. For the quickest updates, please follow me on YouTube, where I post my daily WGN Radio war reports. But as always we will keep trying to send this newsletter daily.

Key Takeaways from War Day 951:
Vice Presidential Debate Snub:
Despite critical global conflicts, Ukraine was not mentioned during the U.S. Vice Presidential debate. Both candidates, especially JD Vance, who’s been vocal against supporting Ukraine, avoided the topic entirely.Harris’s Burning Question:
Vice President Harris gave a strong speech next to Zelensky recently, but no one has asked her a crucial question: Will she continue Biden’s policy of restricting Ukraine from striking back at Russian targets?Trump’s Grim Prediction:
Trump recently claimed “Ukraine is gone, all hope is lost,” a stark contrast to the reality on the ground. Ukrainians and European leaders know exactly what to do—fire back with precision weapons, the ones promised but delayed by Washington.Middle East Tensions:
As Israel endured a major missile assault, the connection between Moscow, Tehran, and terror groups like Hamas became more evident. Russian weapons were found in Hezbollah tunnels, confirming what Ukraine has known: Russia is backing terror worldwide.U.S. Hesitancy:
Despite the Wall Street Journal emphasizing Ukraine’s importance to global security and the Black Sea’s strategic role, Washington’s slow response is costing lives. Why won’t the U.S. allow Ukraine to strike Russian soil? The Battle for Vuhledar:
Ukraine has lost the small mining town of Vuhledar after 900 days of resistance. While not a major loss strategically, it shows how Russian forces continue to chip away at Ukrainian territory in a war of attrition.Soldier Musicians in Georgia:
Ukrainian soldier-musicians from the Cultural Forces are currently in Atlanta at the Military Influencers Conference with Jon Stewart, forging bonds with hurricane victims in the Southeast, highlighting solidarity between those fighting natural and man-made disasters.Russia’s Costly Assault:
Russia spent 900 days trying to take a tiny mining town in eastern Ukraine, Vuhledar, now left in ruins. While the city is insignificant, it shows how Russia is willing to pour resources into pointless destruction, hoping to grind down Ukraine.
RADIO WAR DAY 950: Ukraine, Israel, and Iran: What are the lessons and connections?
LVIV—As Ukraine celebrates the Day of Defenders and the religious holiday honoring the protective veil of the Mother of God, Russian forces close in on the city of Pokrovsk—ironically named after this sacred protection. Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines face deadly FPV drones that lock onto them with precision, while in Lviv, church bells ring in prayer for their survival. With Russia’s brutal attacks and the U.S.’s red lines, Ukrainians wonder: how long must they hold back before taking decisive action to win this war? Will they be able to strike as Israel does?
🎙️ On WGN Radio with Bob Sirott in Chicago and Joe Lindsley in Ukraine: The only American show reporting live from Ukraine every weekday of Russia's full-scale war. | Tuesday 1 October 2024
Daily Intel from SILICON CURTAIN — with host JONATHAN FINK in OXFORD
The Russian war economy is not doing well. But it seems like there is an attritional race on – will the Russian war machine collapse before the will and resolve of Ukraine’s allies, to support it for victory. Is it time to let go of the idea that Russia has endless resources to continue the war indefinitely, and that historically is not uncommon for Russia to lose wars – and catastrophically, without the country, and indeed the world, ceasing to exist. The next six months will likely prove crucial, and we’ll be exploring these issues today with Anders Puck Nielsen.
---------- GUEST: Anders Puck Nielsen - YouTuber and military analyst. Today I’m speaking with Anders Puck Nielsen, military analyst and influential YouTuber based in Denmark. He specialises in naval warfare and strategy; in today’s video we are going to be talking about Ukrainian successes against Russia’s Black Sea fleet and state of the ground war in Ukraine.
Jay in Kyiv, American in Kyiv:
Russia now sends 3 times the kamikaze drones it did just 2 months ago. Meanwhile, the US has cut aid by 90% as not to "provoke Putin".
“Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.” —Kris Kristofferson, and the Ukrainians.
Pokrovsk, a small Ukrainian town that Russia has been trying to destroy for months, carries the name of today’s Ukrainian holiday—the Feast of the Protective Veil of the Mother of God. This theme of protection also marks October 1 as Ukraine’s Day of Defenders and Defendresses.
These defenders are still holding the line, protecting Europe from a Russian regime that backs Iran, Hamas, and Beijing. Yet, Joe Biden is restricting Ukraine from striking back, allowing the flames of war to grow as appeasement emboldens tyrants worldwide.
