From seaside Odesa, Fink’s favorite city, I host this conversation along with my ornery Ukrainian friend Zakhar Pikh , currently in Dnipro.

🎙🎙🎙 Chicago WGN Radio Daily Ukraine Report:
From 1 September:
UKRAINE—Yesterday, I wanted to see what had happened in Nikopol, a city I knew before the Russians began to shell it daily from their position across the river. You can listen at link below to this story on Chicago's WGN Radio with Bob Sirott.
I took the blacked-out overnight train through the abundant steppes from Odesa east to Zaporizhzhia, near the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. We had a 30 minute stop at 7am in Nikopol.
After being briefly detained at the station—people were on edge after one of the most gruesome nights—I met up with a great friend there, Serhii, who, with only 10 minutes before the train was to depart, whizzed us around to see the destruction. No one had slept that night, he said, except maybe those who nightly drive into outlying fields and sleep in their cars.
The main boulevard had been shelled. I saw civilians sweeping up debris on the sidewalks and trying to cover broken windows of flats and shops. This was only hours after the night-shelling ended and everyone knew that at any moment a new volley could rain down on them. Still, they swept, quietly.
A couple stepped over broken glass, through a broken door, to enter a coffee stand. This seems so simple but the quiet bravery and dignity of these Ukrainians against pure evil that hits their city day and night stirred sadness and rage in me.
Racing back to the station we passed the city bazaar, formerly where farmers and grandmas hawked produce, now a ruin.
Then some comic relief: Our train had left, with all our gear except the emergency things we had. No matter: Serhii drove us to Zaporizhzhia. On the dashboard, perhaps hiding from the shelling, was Ihor, Serhii's new friend, a grasshopper, a two-day refugee.
Zaporizhzhia, a city that reminds me of Cincinnati, also had a night of hell: "Really scary night last night man. I thought I was going to die," a friend wrote.
In Zaporizhzhia, the train conductors welcomed us with smiles. "We knew you'd be back." Bemused soldiers and passengers watched as Anton, translator and videographer from Ukrainian Freedom News, and I gathered our gear.
We arrived in Dnipro with Serhii. He wanted to have lunch at a great Georgian restaurant there, before he drove back into the hell-spot to keep his business going, his people employed. Air-alarm sounded in Dnipro then, too.
At the Dnipro hotel we spoke with a man drinking a sad beer. A soldier, he showed a death photo of his best friend, killed the day before. “To victory,” I said in Ukrainian as we left. He was ready to cry. He was returning to the fight today.
Amid this, the news: It seems Ukraine is making a major push to retake occupied Kherson, the fertile land that has been occupied and brutalized since March.
And this morning, as International Atomic Energy officials prepare to try to enter the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Russians are reportedly shelling the road they must travel.
