We start with a haunting song by Suzanne Vega, of "Tom's Diner" fame: "The Last Train to Mariupol." Some think it's silly for celebrities to sing about Ukraine, but such songs offer comfort to those who have survived Russian hell.
And what is happening in Zaporizhzhia? Russians claim they are taking more territory, especially around the little town of Hulyaipole.
That town by the way was the epicentre of a 20th century Ukrainian freedom movement—sort of a gentle anarchism of Nestor Makhno, a philosophy of independence from government and dependence on each other.

24 January Situation Report: Shortage of electricity; Zelenskiy bars MPs and judges from leaving country amid new corruption inquests

Days after a helicopter crash killed three senior members of Ukraine’s Internal Affairs ministry, including the minister, who was close to President Zelenskiy, Kyiv has banned members of Parliament and judges from leaving the country.
Meanwhile, the battle against corruption has developments: Ukrainian police have charged a deputy infrastructure minister with accepting a bribe and the Ukrainian Rada (parliament) has been investigating the Defense Minister Reznikov for purchasing food at inflated prices. He said it was a mistake. We’ll send more information on these topics this week.

KHARKIV REGION
This morning, the enemy shelled Kupiansk again. Residential buildings have been hit, there have been fires.
Yesterday day, Russian troops conducted massive shelling of border settlements in the Kupiansk, Chuhuiv and Kharkiv districts.
In Vovchansk, Chuhuiv District, residential buildings, civil industry facilities, and infrastructure facilities were damaged as a result of shelling. One person was injured. In the village an educational institution and a cultural center were destroyed by rocket fire in Vovchanski Khutory. In the village In Gatyshche of Chuhuiv district, a civil industry object was damaged, there were fires. …
