War Day 701: Literally, What Does 'Victory' Mean?
“It’s important not to let Russia to control the discussion here”
WGN RADIO DAILY UKRAINE REPORT
War Day 701: What Does Victory Mean? And Who Controls the Narrative?
🇺🇦 700+ DAYS OF WAR REPORTING on Chicago's WGN Radio with host Bob Sirott and reporter Joe Lindsley, the only American reporting in Ukraine every single day until victory 🎙️ from Thursday 25 January 2024
KHARKIV—"The Kremlin has agreed to an international investigation into the crash of a plane carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs)." Look, every time the Kremlin cites "international law" on a micro level they are trying to distract from the major fact that Russia's entire war against Ukraine is a crime against humanity. It’s easy to forget this: Most Ukrainian soldiers were civilians before Russia's big invasion.
Today we look at the details of the destruction of a plane allegedly carrying POWs, and we discuss the literal meaning of victory in Ukrainian. It means something like doing the impossible.
The Ukrainian language, many linguists think, is very close to the original Indo-European tongue and so we can more easily find the deep, ancient meaning of many words …
Kharkiv artist Gamlet—whom many call Ukraine’s “Banksy,” though he is not anonymous—arrived on the scene to help within minutes of Russia’s nighttime bombing of Maker’s coffeeshop and neighbouring places: “In the twilight there is an encouraging lack of clarity/space for dreams.”
War Day 699: “Maybe I’m naive but I don’t think evil should win”: the story of a haunting photo at a world-changing protest
Russia’s war on Ukraine would not be happening today if 10 years ago Ukrainians hadn’t made a stand against tyranny in their Maidan, or “public square,” Revolution. Without that revolution, Moscow would already control Ukraine.
Here’s the haunting story of a photograph of Serhiy Nihoyan—see first comment—an Armenian-Ukrainian protestor killed at the Maidan by the Moscow-backed secret police January 22, 2014. Days after this picture was taken both he and the photographer were dead. But there’s something weird in the photo …
By the way those secret police no longer exist. That revolution was successful. The people actually evicted the corrupt regime and took their country back.
“Maybe I’m naive but I don’t think evil should win,” Serhiy said. “Sooner or later, the good will prevail.”
