War Day 705: “Yes living in this city is crazy, dangerous, frightful, and so desperately needed"

War Day 705: “Yes living in this city is crazy, dangerous, frightful, and so desperately needed"
🇺🇦 700+ DAYS OF WAR REPORTING on Chicago's WGN Radio with host Bob Sirott and reporter Joe Lindsley, the only American reporting in Ukraine every single day until victory 🎙️ from Monday 29 January 2024
I report today from the ruins created by one of Russia's many attacks last week on Kharkiv, a city just 30 miles from Russia. What I find most extraordinary here is that even after weeks of intense Russian assaults, more Ukrainians and foreigners are coming to this city, boldly to say they will not surrender.
So much of this damage could be mitigated were the White House to act in accord with its rhetoric: to send proper air defense to this and other free cities standing against a maniacal tyranny.
As the Kharkiv street artist Gamlet painted on on a recently board-up window, it is at the edge of darkness, in the twilight, that the true essence of things can be seen. Here in Kharkiv are bold souls with courage to face the fear for freedom's sake.
“Yes living in this city is crazy, dangerous, frightful, and so desperately needed
“ … to live in Kharkiv is to be in your place because you want to, because you need to, because you don’t want to leave, because you don’t want to leave it alone!
“ … to live here is to feel love in the heart every day so openly, in case you cannot wake up in the morning, every moment here is sincere, real for all hundred, two hundred thousand people
“… if we left this city , the russians would ocucpy it, they would take it.

I report from Kharkiv to show how even in a place where Russian missiles hit without warning Ukrainians show the world what it means to live freely. Listen to people underground, in January, sing the songs of Christmas, which Ukrainians in defiance of the world celebrate until February.
But time is running out: "Nobody knows the exact timeline of Russia's madness, but we know Ukraine is buying us time and paying for it with blood," says Lithuania's foreign minister.
ROCK RACHON
Does the White House Really Care About Ukraine?
The third year of Russian aggression against Ukraine is fast approaching, as is the 10th anniversary of the illegal annexation of Crimea by the Putler state. Ukraine's front lines, frozen by the unrelenting eastern frost, are still seething with brutal activity, while in Western salons decision-makers are "changing their strategy" regarding helping the attacked nation. Our friend Joe Lindsley talks to us today from the site where a Russian ballistic missile impacted - near his apartment in the residential district of the city of Kharkiv.

Russia is adept at manipulating unwitting Western media to follow Moscow's tune: Instead of focusing on Ukraine's great success at destroying some of Russia's essential aircraft, the press trumpets Moscow's unfounded accusations.
Meanwhile, why won't the US and Germany send Ukraine sufficient air defense to cities like Kharkiv?
And the UK, where both the left and the right stand with Ukraine, seeks creative ways to help, while Putin pokes around in Kaliningrad, Russia's bizarre enclave in Europe. Here's what's happening.
