Wartime Tarot, Episode 1: The Schoolgirl in the Bomb Shelter | with @neivanmade
The Russian war on Christmas: heard about it?
Merry Christmas from Ukraine! We will not be making our daily WGN Radio Ukraine reports this week, but we will be sharing with you a few special interviews and stories from wartime Ukraine, as well as highlights from the past year.
🇺🇦 600+ DAYS OF WAR REPORTING. Every weekday of Russia's war on Ukraine, Joe Lindsley reports from on the ground on Chicago's WGN Radio with host Bob Sirot and other platforms.🎙️
🚨 Ukraine has hit a major Russian warship off the coast of occupied Crimea in the Black Sea. Already since Ukrainian attacks with British Storm Shadow missiles in August, the Russian Black Sea Fleet has been on the run, fleeing to further reaches of the Black Sea, making it harder for Moscow to attack Ukrainian cities. Every time there is a Ukrainian success in the Black Sea, I like this share this cheery song, “Vastopol,” played by Elizabeth Cotton, and written by an Ohioan who was reading newspaper accounts of Sevastopol during the Crimea War in the 19th century:
WARTIME TAROT, EPISODE 1
The Schoolgirl in the Bomb Shelter | with @neivanmade
An immersive look at life in war American journalist Joe Lindsley and Ukrainian artist Neivanmade, aka Mykhailo Skop, share stories of life and resistance from Ukraine through the prism of Skop's wartime Tarot cards.
Each card, in the style of Tarot, features a sketch of Ukrainians in war, from children to warriors. In each episode, Joe draws a card at random and SKOP shares the story, along with a corresponding quotation he's chosen from sources including the Bible, philosophers, and poets.
In this first episode, "The High Priestess," features a young girl studying in a shelter during a missile attack, symbolizing the pursuit of wisdom as the best protection. Neivanmade based the drawing on a phot of his niece in a bomb shelter.

War Memo: Fox News *Almost* Says the Truth About Burisma and Russia But Then Misses It Entirely
In an interview with Fox News's Brian Kilmeade, Viktor Shokin, former prosecutor general of Ukraine, says that Biden enabled Russia to take Crimea without firing a shot. A Fox News host then asks Kilmeade to explain what Shokin meant.
Kilmeade, amazingly unaware, says he has no idea. “The timing isn’t exactly right.”
How hard is it to look at the events of the 2014, in Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington? If we would open our eyes, we would see the timeline of winter and spring in 2014 reveals much ...
Hunter Biden began to work with a friend of Putin exactly when Putin took Crimea, and Hunter’s father and his father’s boss did nothing to stop Russia.
DAILY UKRAINE REPORT ON CHICAGO’S WGN RADIO
War Day 667, the last report of the year: Christmas in Ukraine, After Almost Two Years of Daily Ukraine Reports
🇺🇦 600+ DAYS OF WAR REPORTING on Chicago's WGN Radio with host Bob Sirott and reporter Joe Lindsley, the only American reporting in Ukraine every single day until victory 🎙️ from Friday 22 December 2023
In western Ukraine, in a region called Galicia, Soviet Moscow was not able to destroy culture and religion, and to this day, Christmas is celebrate more vibrantly in Lviv and Galicia than anywhere in the modern world. Here's a taste of it.
And in this final WGN radio Ukraine broadcast of 2023, we share words of gratitude from a Ukrainian soldier at the front, thanking listeners for their support. Indeed, this WGN Ukraine report is the only broadcast from Ukraine every single weekday since Russia's full-scale invasion. No one else has done anything close--and as a result, the people of Chicago, at least, have not grown weary of the war. On the contrary, WGN listeners donate and even travel to Ukraine to help.

Ukraine's counteroffensive hasn't failed. Look closely at the latest developments in the Black Sea. The Air Forces report the destruction of the large russian landing ship Novocherkask near Feodosiya last night. With five Russian jets downed lately, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are generous with morale-boosting gifts for Ukrainians this week.
Yet that proves again that Ukrainians are capable of squeezing maximum of the limited resources available. Now imagine where this war would be now if Ukraine received modern battle tanks 9 months earlier, longer range missiles 1 year earlier, modern fighter jets 1,5 years earlier. Why are we still denied Taurus missiles? Why did we receive only a handful of Atacms?
I hope the right conclusions would be drawn that "Standing with Ukraine as long as it takes" won't bring anything good for us or our partners. Ukrainian victory should be the desired outcome
Light vs Darkness: Is This the Greatest Christmas Culture In Europe?
The Russian war on Christmas
LVIV—Merry Christmas from Ukraine, as amid church bells the air-raid alarms also sound, with several Russian jets posing a threat. This is the first Christmas since the Moscow-Bolshevik upheaval in 1917 that all of Ukraine is celebrating December 25.
In Soviet times, Moscow sought to erase Christmas. This can be felt in eastern Ukraine where New Years has been a bigger holiday. But as this video from two months before Russia’s full-scale invasion shows, in Western Ukraine people held on to their traditions.
In many ways, Lviv and the surrounding region of Galicia are probably the place in Europe where tradition thrives the most, especially at Christmas.
The way to say Merry Christmas in Ukrainian is Христос Родився / Khrystos Rodyvsia, meaning “Christ is born.” In Galicia, for the next couple weeks, these words will replace the standard greetings “good day / good evening.” And when you hear that greeting, you respond with “Славімо Його / Slavimo Yoho”: glory to him. It’s a pretty nice custom. Russia is seeking to destroy such a culture. And so we can say that Russia is making an actual war on Christmas. 🎄
This video from before the war but in wartime Ukraine the churches are crowded and there is caroling in the streets: Christmas is especially needed in the darkest hours.
