War Day 572: "Surviving the Destruction: Stories of Resilience and Rebuilding in Ukraine"
THE LADY WHO DE-MINED HER OWN GARDEN
KHARKIV—Joseph Lindsley, reporting from Ukraine, describes the city of Kharkiv as the "center of the free world", despite being only 30 miles from Russia and frequently under air alarm. Lindsley and his team delivered a drone, purchased with the help of listeners from Chicago and the Ukrainian Catholic University, to Ukrainian soldiers.
They also visited a small village south of Kharkiv that had been under Russian occupation and is now being rebuilt. Lindsley shares stories of the villagers, including a woman who had to bury her own son after finding his remains post-liberation. Despite the hardships, the villagers remain resilient and hopeful, embodying the Ukrainian spirit of "Volya", or the will to freedom.
500+ DAYS OF WAR-REPORTING—from Monday 18 September 2023 —JOE LINDSLEY REPORTS FROM UKRAINE EVERY DAY SINCE RUSSIA'S 2022 FULL-SCALE INVASION, on Chicago's @wgnradio with Bob Sirott. UNTIL VICTORY. THE LADY WHO DE-MINED HER OWN GARDEN

War Day 569: "We Are Free Persons. With Huge Problems, But We Are Free. We Are Wild"
MILLIONS OF CHURCHILLS
KHARKIV—In World War II, one poetic, wild, choleric, uncontrollable person led the resistance to Hitler's tyranny: Winston Churchill's England stood while so much of Europe fell. Today, a nation of millions of fierce, wild, choleric, uncontrollable people lead the resistance to Putin's tyranny.
Without those millions of Churchills making their stand, imagine how much of Europe would be, as in the 1930s, engulfed in war. Real freedom is something wild. It's hard to manage, but it's perhaps only those wild souls who stand up to tyranny. I pre-recorded today's show while on a train traveling from Kyiv to Kharkiv. With little cell service, and so no knowledge of incoming attacks, I had time to think deeply about what it means to be free.
