“I’ll Thank You Not to Speak Like That, Son”
Reporting from Lviv: As the battle intensifies in the small salt-mine town of Soledar, eastern Ukraine, the skies are eerily quiet in much of the rest of the country. This gives space to think about the awful absurdity of Russia’s war—and to remember strange moments from the past that inform me in this great war between good and evil.

11 January 2023, daily Ukraine report on Chicago's WGN Radio:
Topics:
—President Zelenskiy’s Golden Globes speech: “This will not be a trilogy; there will be no World War III”
—What is Russia doing right now? Have the Russians shifted tactics away from artillery?
—The strange calm in the skies: One week without major missile strikes, or even air-raid alarms
—“Escalation vs Victory”: When Ukraine has a major victory, Russia and some in the West say that Ukraine is “escalating” things. In the face of that, President Zelenskiy says there is only one way to “de-escalate” the situation with Russia": to get more and better weapons to Ukraine to neutralize the Russian threat to the world. Ukrainians will do the fighting; they just need the weapons. (Former NATO deputy chief General Sir Richard Shirref agreed with this recently, saying Britain should have sent more tanks to Ukraine months ago):
